Cervical Cancer Screening (PAP Smear and HPV Test)

Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer affects cells of the cervix (neck of the womb). Cervical cancer is caused by a virus known as the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) which is transmitted via sexual intercourse. Cervical cancer is preventable with regular screening. Screening allows early detection of pre-cancerous cells within the cervix which can be easily treated. Hence it is important for all women who have ever had sexual activity aged 25 years and above to undergo regular cervical cancer screening.

Symptoms of Cervical Cancer

Common symptoms include:

  • Vaginal bleeding between period
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Change in colour of vaginal discharge
  • Vaginal bleeding after menopause

It is important to note that symptoms of cervical cancer may mimic other gynaecological conditions (e.g fibroids/cysts), and early cervical cancer often does not present with symptoms.

Cervical Cancer Screening

This is recommended for women who ever had sexual activity. Cervical screening generally comes in two forms, either a PAP Smear or HPV Test.
