• Disseminated Gonococcal Infection (DGI), characterised by joint pain, skin lesions, and, in severe cases, infections of the heart or brain.
• Increased risk of contracting and transmitting HIV.
• Neonatal infections such as conjunctivitis in infants born to infected mothers, which can lead to blindness if untreated.

Symptoms usually appear within 1 to 14 days after exposure.

Yes, gonorrhoea can be effectively cured with antibiotics.

Treatment usually involves a single injection and a one-week course of oral antibiotics, with symptoms improving within a few days.

Follow-up tests are recommended about two weeks after treatment concludes to ensure the infection has been fully eradicated, especially if symptoms persist or there is a risk of reinfection.

Treatment typically includes a combination of ceftriaxone and azithromycin or doxycycline to also cover potential chlamydial infection.
