What Is E. coli (ETEC) Vaccine?

The E. coli (ETEC) vaccine is designed to protect against infections caused by Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC), a leading cause of travellers’ diarrhoea and diarrhoeal disease in children.

What is E. coli?

Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a bacterium typically found in the intestines of humans and animals. While most strains are harmless, certain pathogenic types like ETEC can cause serious gastrointestinal infections by producing toxins that disrupt the normal absorption of fluids in the intestines, leading to diarrhoea. ETEC is a major cause of diarrhoea worldwide, especially in areas with poor sanitation, and poses a significant risk to travellers.

E. coli (ETEC) Symptoms

ETEC infections typically cause symptoms such as diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, nausea, and occasionally fever. Fatigue and dehydration may also occur due to fluid loss. Symptoms usually appear within 1-3 days after exposure and typically resolve within a few days. While most cases are mild, severe dehydration may require medical attention.

How Is E. coli (ETEC) Vaccine Administered?

The E. coli (ETEC) vaccine is typically administered orally, making it easy to take without the need for injections. At ATA Medical, we offer DUKORAL® oral vaccine, which protects against both ETEC and cholera.

E. coli (ETEC) Vaccine Dose & Schedule

For DUKORAL® oral vaccine, the dosage schedule is as follows:

Age Group Vaccine Dosage & Schedule
Adults & Children above 6 years 2 Doses: 1 week apart. The second dose should be taken 1 week before travel.
Children between 2-6 years
Children under 2 years DUKORAL® is not recommended for use in children under 2 years.

If you're unsure about the appropriate vaccine dosage and schedule, it's best to consult a doctor for guidance.

How Long Does E. coli (ETEC) Vaccine Last?

DUKORAL® oral vaccine provides protection against ETEC travellers' diarrhoea, lasting approximately three months. Additionally, it offers coverage against cholera, with the cholera protection lasting for a longer period.

E. coli (ETEC) Vaccine Side Effects

Common side effects of the E. coli (ETEC) vaccine are mild and may include tiredness, fever, headache, abdominal pain, and diarrhoea. These symptoms typically resolve on their own, but it is advisable to consult a doctor if they persist.

Uncommon but Severe Reactions to Watch Out for After Your Vaccination

In rare cases, severe allergic reactions might occur, such as swelling of the face or eyes, breathing difficulties, or widespread itchy rashes. Seek immediate medical attention if any of these symptoms are observed.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

DUKORAL® oral vaccine provides protection for ETEC and cholera for travellers to high-risk areas. ATA Medical offers DUKORAL® oral vaccine which protects against ETEC and cholera at $272.50 NETT and inclusive of GST.
EHEC (Enterohemorrhagic E. coli) causes severe gastrointestinal symptoms, including bloody diarrhoea and can lead to Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). ETEC (Enterotoxigenic E. coli) primarily causes watery diarrhoea and is a leading cause of travellers’ diarrhoea and childhood diarrhoea in developing countries.
ETEC infection occurs when Enterotoxigenic E. coli bacteria enter the body, typically through contaminated food or water, causing watery diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, and sometimes nausea.
ETEC can be avoided by practising good hand hygiene, drinking safe water, eating properly cooked food, avoiding street food in high-risk areas, and getting vaccinated.
Treatment for ETEC primarily involves oral rehydration, with intravenous fluids used in more serious cases. Antibiotics may be prescribed in severe cases but are typically not necessary.
Yes, ETEC produces a toxin that is similar in structure and function to the cholera toxin, causing similar symptoms of watery diarrhoea.
ETEC produces two main toxins: heat-labile toxin (LT) and heat-stable toxin (ST), both of which disrupt the normal absorption process in the intestines, leading to diarrhoea.
Yes, EHEC produces Shiga-like toxins, which can cause severe gastrointestinal symptoms and complications like Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS).
ETEC infections typically last for 3 to 5 days, with symptoms usually resolving on their own with proper hydration.
ETEC stands for Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli, a type of E. coli bacteria that causes diarrhoea.
Complications of ETEC can include severe dehydration, especially in young children and the elderly, and in rare cases, it can lead to more serious conditions if not treated promptly.
ETEC E. coli is typically contracted by consuming contaminated food or water, particularly in areas with poor sanitation.
The terms E. coli I and E. coli II are not standard classifications. E. coli is generally categorised by pathogenic types, such as ETEC (Enterotoxigenic E. coli) or EHEC (Enterohemorrhagic E. coli).
ETEC causes diarrhoea by producing toxins that interfere with the intestines' ability to absorb fluids, leading to excessive fluid secretion.
