What Is Cholera Vaccine?

The cholera vaccine is an oral vaccine that provides protection against cholera. It is recommended for individuals travelling to areas where cholera is endemic or where there is a high risk of outbreaks.

What is Cholera?

Cholera is an acute intestinal infection caused by the Vibrio cholerae bacterium, which spreads through contaminated food and water.

Cholera Symptoms

Symptoms of cholera can include:

  • Profuse watery diarrhoea
  • Vomiting
  • Leg cramps
  • Abdominal pain

If not treated promptly, cholera can lead to severe dehydration, hypovolemic shock, acute renal failure, and potentially death.

How to Prevent Cholera?

When travelling to high-risk areas, it is essential to maintain good hygiene practices. Regular handwashing with soap, drinking only safe, treated water, and ensuring proper food preparation are crucial. Avoid raw or undercooked foods, untreated water, and ice made from untreated water. Vaccination remains an important preventive measure, especially for travellers and residents in regions where cholera is prevalent.

How Is the Cholera Vaccine Administered?

The cholera vaccine is administered orally and is typically taken in one to three doses, depending on the specific product and age. At ATA Medical, we offer the DUKORAL® oral vaccine, which protects against both cholera and ETEC (a type of E. coli bacteria).

Cholera Vaccine Dose & Schedule

For DUKORAL® oral vaccine, the dosage schedule is as follows:

Age Group Vaccine Dosage & Schedule
Adults & Children above 6 years 2 Doses: 1 week apart. The second dose should be taken 1 week before travel.
One booster should be given within 2 years after the last dose.
Children between 2-6 years 3 Doses: 1 week apart. The third dose should be taken 1 week before travel.
One booster should be given 6 months after the last dose.
Children under 2 years DUKORAL® is not recommended for use in children under 2 years.

If you're unsure about the appropriate vaccine dosage and schedule, it's best to consult a doctor for guidance.

How Long Does Cholera Vaccine Last?

DUKORAL® oral vaccine offers protection for approximately two years in adults and children over 6 years of age. Booster dose is advised for continued protection if there is ongoing risk of cholera or repeated travel to endemic areas. Children aged 2-6 years require a booster after six months for continued protection. If more than two years have passed for adults or more than six months for children aged 2-6 years since the last vaccination, a complete primary immunisation course is recommended to renew protection.

Cholera Vaccine Side Effects

Common side effects of the cholera vaccine are mild and may include tiredness, fever, headache, abdominal pain, and diarrhoea. These symptoms typically resolve on their own, but it is advisable to consult a doctor if they persist.

Uncommon but Severe Reactions to Watch Out for After Your Vaccination

In rare cases, severe allergic reactions might occur, such as swelling of the face or eyes, breathing difficulties, or widespread itchy rashes. Seek immediate medical attention if any of these symptoms are observed.
