Shingles is a painful viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which also causes chickenpox. Shingrix is a non-live, recombinant vaccine specifically designed to protect against shingles. It has been shown to offer over 90% effectiveness in preventing both shingles and the subsequent complications, such as postherpetic neuralgia. The Shingrix vaccine, as compared to other available shingles vaccines, offers up to 10 years of long-lasting protection.

Shingrix is administered in two doses. The second dose is typically given 2 to 6 months following the initial dose.

• Adults Aged 50 and Older: Regardless of whether they recall having had chickenpox, all adults aged 50 years and older are recommended to receive the Shingrix vaccine. This is because the risk of shingles and its complications increases with age.
• People Who Have Had Shingles Before: Even if someone has had shingles in the past, they can still receive the Shingrix vaccine to help prevent future occurrences of the disease.
• Those Previously Vaccinated With Zostavax: Zostavax was a live shingles vaccine given as a single injection, which was used before the availability of Shingrix. People who received Zostavax are recommended to later get vaccinated with Shingrix.
• Adults With Chronic Medical Conditions: Shingrix can be administered to adults with chronic conditions like diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and chronic kidney disease. However, individuals should always consult their doctors to determine the vaccine's appropriateness for their specific health circumstances.
