Hepatitis B Vaccine Singapore
What Is the Hepatitis B Vaccine?
The Hepatitis B vaccine is a safe and effective vaccine that provides immunity against the Hepatitis B virus (HBV). This virus primarily affects the liver, leading to conditions such as chronic liver disease, liver cirrhosis, and liver cancer. The vaccine is intended to prevent these serious health complications.
How Is Hepatitis B Transmitted?
It can be transmitted through exposure to infected blood or bodily fluids. This can occur through various means, including mother-to-child transmission at birth, sharing needles, unprotected sexual contact, and less commonly, through sharing personal items like razors or toothbrushes that are contaminated with infected blood.
What Are Some Symptoms of Hepatitis B?
Symptoms may include:
- Abdominal pain
- Jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes)
- Joint pain
- Nausea
- Vomiting
Hepatitis B can sometimes not show any symptoms. If you have any symptoms or want to learn more about Hepatitis B and its vaccine, it is recommended that you consult with your doctor.
Who Should Receive the Hepatitis B Vaccine?
As per the Singapore National Childhood
Immunisation Schedule (NCIS), it is recommended that every child receives three doses of the
vaccine at the prescribed intervals. The first dose should be administered at birth,
and it is typical for infants to complete the full series by the time they reach six months
of age.
Also, as per the Singapore National Adult Immunisation
Schedule (NAIS), individuals aged 18 years or older who have not received
prior vaccination or do not possess proof of past infection or immunity should receive three
doses of the vaccine.
The recommended administration of the three doses is as follows:
- First Dose
- Second Dose (1 month after first dose)
- Third Dose (6 months after first dose)
What Are Some Side Effects of the Vaccine?
- Faintness: To mitigate the risk of fainting, it is advisable to remain seated for at least 15 minutes post-vaccination.
- Discomfort, redness, and swelling: Applying a cold compress to the area can help alleviate these symptoms.
- Headache or fever: You may also use paracetamol to manage the symptoms.
- Fatigue, dizziness, and irritability: These usually resolve without intervention.
If these side effects persist or worsen, it's important to consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance.
Why Are Vaccinations Important?
Vaccinations offer significant individual benefits by boosting the immune system's ability to fight off specific
infectious diseases. They reduce the risk of contracting serious illnesses, leading to fewer medical visits
and a lower chance of hospitalization.
By staying up-to-date with vaccinations, individuals can also enjoy a greater sense of well-being and freedom to
engage in various social activities, knowing they are protected against contagious diseases.
