RSV Vaccine
The RSV vaccine is designed to protect against Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), which can cause severe respiratory illness, particularly in infants, young children, and older adults. In Singapore, the vaccine is approved for use in individuals aged 60 years and older, as well as for pregnant women. When a pregnant woman receives the vaccine between 32 and 36 weeks of pregnancy, the immunity is passed to her baby, helping safeguard the newborn against severe RSV infections.
What Is RSV?
RSV is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms. However, it can lead to severe respiratory infections in vulnerable groups, such as older adults, individuals with chronic heart and lung conditions, and those with weakened immune systems. Despite not being as common as influenza (flu), a four-year study (2014–2018) found that 1 in 4 individuals aged 65 and older in Singapore tested positive for RSV.
RSV Symptoms
RSV symptoms often resemble those of a common cold and include:
- Coughing
- Sneezing
- Runny or blocked nose
- Sore throat
- Wheezing or shortness of breath
- Fever
Although RSV symptoms are often mild, severe cases can escalate into serious health issues:
- Infants: RSV may result in bronchiolitis, presenting with signs such as rapid or labored breathing, irritability, reduced appetite, and bluish skin caused by oxygen deprivation (cyanosis). It can also cause acute bronchitis, especially in younger children.
- Older adults: In older individuals, RSV can worsen existing conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and congestive heart failure, resulting in complications such as bronchitis. Severe cases can further impair respiratory function, potentially progressing to pneumonia or respiratory failure.
RSV Treatment
There is no specific antiviral treatment for RSV. Management of RSV symptoms typically involves supportive care, including rest, hydration, medication for pain and fever. Severe cases may require hospitalisation, where intravenous (IV) fluids, oxygen therapy, or mechanical ventilation might be necessary.
RSV Prevention
Preventing the spread of RSV can include measures such as frequent handwashing, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, disinfecting surfaces regularly, and covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Vaccination is the most effective prevention, significantly reducing the risk of infections and complications.
Who Should Get Vaccinated?
In Singapore, the RSV vaccine is recommended for adults aged 60 and above, as well as for pregnant women. For older adults, particularly those with existing heart or lung conditions like COPD or congestive heart failure, the vaccine offers critical protection against the heightened risks of severe RSV-related complications. Pregnant women can receive the vaccine between 32 and 36 weeks of pregnancy, passing immunity to their babies and safeguarding them from serious RSV infections during their earliest months of life.
How Is the RSV Vaccine Administered?
The RSV vaccine is administered as an intramuscular injection.
RSV Vaccine Dose & Schedule
