Embarking on the spiritual journeys of Hajj and Umrah is a profound experience for Muslims worldwide. Health authorities, in line with international health regulations, recommend specific vaccinations as essential requirements. These measures are designed to protect pilgrims and the communities they return to, minimising health risks associated with large gatherings.
Requirements for Hajj and Umrah
Pilgrims travelling from Singapore to Saudi Arabia for Hajj or Umrah are required to receive three mandatory vaccinations: the Meningococcal ACWY vaccine, the influenza (flu) vaccine, and the COVID-19 vaccine.
1. Meningococcal ACWY Vaccine
The Meningococcal / Meningitis ACWY vaccine is a compulsory requirement by the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Health. This vaccine protects against four strains of Neisseria meningitidis bacteria: A, C, W, and Y. These strains can cause life-threatening meningitis and septicemia, particularly in crowded conditions.
- Timing: Must be administered at least 10 days before departure.
2. Influenza (Flu) Vaccine
The influenza vaccine is also a mandatory requirement for all pilgrims from Singapore. Influenza spreads easily in large gatherings and can lead to complications that may impair a pilgrim’s ability to complete the pilgrimage.
- Timing: Must be received within 12 months before the travel date.
3. COVID-19 Vaccine
The COVID-19 vaccine is compulsory and helps reduce the risk of severe illness and community spread during the pilgrimage. Pilgrims must meet one of the following criteria:
- Have received a single dose of the updated COVID-19 vaccine for the 2024–2025 season
- Have completed the primary series of COVID-19 vaccination
- Have recovered from a COVID-19 infection in 2024, confirmed through laboratory testing
If you are unsure of your COVID-19 vaccination status or eligibility, it is advisable to consult a
doctor 4 to 6 six weeks before travel to review your vaccination needs, consider
preventive medications, and receive personalised health advice.
Pilgrims are also recommended to prepare both physical vaccination certificates and digital
vaccination records via the HealthHub app for verification at Saudi border checks.
Other Requirements and Recommendations
In addition to the meningococcal vaccine, health authorities in Singapore and Saudi Arabia recommend pilgrims to take other vaccinations to ensure a safe pilgrimage.
Pneumococcal Vaccine
The pneumococcal
vaccine is also recommended for individuals who are
at higher risk of pneumococcal disease, such as the elderly, those with chronic health conditions,
or those with weakened immune systems. Pneumococcal disease can cause severe infections of the lungs
(pneumonia), bloodstream (bacteremia), and lining of the brain and spinal cord (meningitis).
Vaccination can provide critical protection against these serious health risks during the Hajj and
Umrah pilgrimages.
By adhering to these vaccination requirements and recommendations, pilgrims from Singapore can
ensure they are well-protected against significant health risks, allowing them to focus on the
spiritual aspects of their journey. For the most current advice and specific vaccination needs, it's
essential to consult with healthcare professionals who are knowledgeable about travel health and the
latest requirements for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims.
