Pfizer-BioNTech/Comirnaty JN.1 COVID-19 Vaccine

The Pfizer-BioNTech/Comirnaty JN.1 COVID-19 vaccine is an updated mRNA vaccine designed to target specific variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, including the Omicron JN.1 variant.

The vaccine uses messenger RNA (mRNA) technology to instruct cells to produce a version of the spike protein. This triggers an immune response, prompting the body to produce antibodies to protect against future infections. Unlike protein-based vaccines, the Comirnaty JN.1 vaccine does not contain any live virus and cannot cause COVID-19.

The Comirnaty JN.1 vaccine, approved for use in Singapore in October 2024, is offered as part of the Ministry of Health’s (MOH) National Vaccination Programme. It is available to individuals aged 12 and older and is suitable for those eligible for mRNA vaccines. COVID-19 vaccination is particularly recommended for:

• Seniors aged 60 and above.
• Individuals aged 6 months and older with medical vulnerabilities.
• Those living or working in high-exposure environments, such as healthcare workers.

The vaccine is also an option for those who wish to update their COVID-19 vaccination status with the latest formulation targeting prevalent variants.

The Comirnaty JN.1 vaccine is administered as an intramuscular injection, typically into the upper arm.
