Meningococcal Vaccine in Singapore (2024)
Meningococcal immunizations are designed to prevent meningococcal disease, which is caused by four
types of Neisseria meningitidis bacteria (A, C, Y, W-135). This disease can lead to serious
infections of the brain, spinal cord (meningitis), bloodstream
(septicaemia), or lungs (pneumonia).
Symptoms often include:
- sudden headaches,
- fever,
- nausea,
- aversion to light,
- neck stiffness,
- a specific rash.
Infants might show general discomfort, incessant crying, or eating difficulties. The disease spreads through close personal interactions or airborne particles from an infected person. Despite its rarity, meningococcal disease is severe and can result in death or permanent disability.
Eligibility for Meningococcal Vaccination
The vaccine is advised for individuals at higher risk of contracting the disease, including:
- Those visiting Mecca for religious pilgrimages (Hajj or Umrah)
- Travellers to sub-Saharan Africa
- Individuals with compromised immune systems due to conditions like HIV, spleen issues, or certain treatments
- Close contacts of individuals diagnosed with the disease
- People in areas experiencing an outbreak
If you are unsure, please consult a doctor for medical advice.
What Precautions Should I Take Prior to a Meningococcal Immunization?
Before receiving the vaccine, inform your healthcare provider if you:

- have recently been vaccinated for something else,
- or have a history of Guillain-Barré Syndrome or bleeding disorders.
Administration of the Meningococcal Vaccination
The vaccine is administered as an injection into the muscle. It's recommended to have the vaccination 10 to 14 days before potential exposure or travel to build sufficient immunity.
When Should I Be Vaccinated?
The best time to get vaccinated is at least 10-14 days before travel. This allows the vaccine time to take effect and provide protection against the virus.
How Many Doses Do I Need?
- 1 Dose for Healthy Adults
- 1 Dose for pre-teens and teens (11 to 12 years old), 2nd Dose (booster) at 16 years old

Protection from the vaccination lasts for around 5 years.
Typical Reactions to the Meningococcal Vaccination
Some individuals may experience dizziness, pain, or redness at the injection site, headaches, or in the case of children, crying and sleepiness. These are generally mild and temporary, but please consult a doctor if they persist or worsen.
