What Is an ECDA Medical Check-Up?

An ECDA medical check-up is a pre-employment health screening required for individuals working in early childhood development centres in Singapore. It is mandated under the Early Childhood Development Centres Regulations and administered by the Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA).

The screening usually includes a chest X-ray and assessment of your immunity status for measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella.

Because childcare and preschool staff have close, daily contact with young children, the check-up helps ensure that staff working in these settings do not pose a risk of transmitting certain infectious diseases. The results are generally valid for 12 months from the date of certification.

Who Needs an ECDA Medical Check-Up?

An ECDA medical check-up is required for individuals deployed to provide services at an ECDA-licensed centre, not only teaching staff. This requirement applies to anyone who may work in the centre environment or have contact with children.

This can include:

  1. Educators, assistant educators, and principals at childcare centres and preschools
  2. Programme helpers, cooks, and cleaners employed by the centre
  3. Administrative and headquarters staff of the licensee
  4. Enrichment vendors and relief staff providing services at the centre
  5. Interns and researchers working directly with children
  6. Learning support professionals such as Development Support and Learning Support (DS-LS) staff, ProFLAiR staff, speech therapists, and psychologists

If you have already been certified fit using ECDA's pre-employment medical examination form within the past 12 months, you generally do not need to repeat the check-up when starting work at a new centre.

What Does the ECDA Medical Check-Up Include?

The ECDA medical check-up includes a general physical examination, a chest X-ray, and verification of vaccination or immunity status for four infectious diseases, as outlined in the official pre-employment medical report form.

General Physical Examination

The general physical examination reviews your overall health. As part of the assessment, you will need to declare any history of certain medical conditions, including psychiatric conditions, epilepsy, tuberculosis, or heart conditions.

Additional documentation may be required if you have an existing psychiatric condition.

Chest X-Ray

A chest X-ray screens for active tuberculosis (TB). This is required because tuberculosis can spread through airborne droplets and may pose a risk in environments where staff and children interact closely.

Chest X-ray used to screen for tuberculosis during ECDA medical check-up.

Vaccination and Immunity Verification

Vaccination or immunity is assessed for four infectious diseases: measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (chickenpox). These infections can spread easily in childcare settings and may lead to outbreaks among young children.

Mumps, rubella, and varicella can be self-declared on the medical form without documentary evidence, whereas measles has stricter documentation requirements. For measles, you will need to provide one of the following:

  • A certificate confirming you have received 2 doses of measles vaccination (usually given as the MMR vaccine)
  • A serological test result showing immunity against measles
  • A laboratory test result confirming a previous measles infection

If vaccination history is unclear or immunity cannot be confirmed, you will need to either undergo a serological blood test or receive MMR vaccination. If the test shows that you are not immune, MMR vaccination will be required.

You may still start work after receiving 1 dose of MMR, provided the second dose is scheduled within 12 months. The scheduled date will be recorded on the medical form, and you will need to return to complete the second dose.

Note: Singapore citizens or Permanent Residents born in Singapore before 1 January 1975 are exempt from providing documentary evidence of measles immunity.

How Long Does the ECDA Medical Check-Up Take?

At ATA Medical, the ECDA medical check-up typically takes 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the tests required. If serological blood tests are needed to check your immunity status, results are usually available within 2 working days via email.

A 24-hour express report option is available at an additional $32.70 NETT for check-ups conducted in the morning.

If you are required to receive the full two-dose MMR vaccination, you will need to return for a second visit to complete the vaccination schedule. The earliest the second dose can be given is 28 days after the first dose.

How to Prepare for Your ECDA Medical Check-Up

Preparing for the ECDA medical check-up is straightforward. Bring the right documents and you can typically complete it in a single visit.

What to bring:

  1. Your NRIC, passport, or FIN
  2. The ECDA pre-employment medical report form (available from your employer or downloadable from the ECDA website)
  3. Any existing vaccination records, Health Booklet, or immunisation records from the HealthHub app
  4. Documentary evidence of measles immunity, if you have it
  5. A specialist letter, if you have a declared medical condition such as a psychiatric condition

On the day:

  • Wear comfortable clothing suitable for a physical examination and chest X-ray
  • Avoid wearing metal accessories, as these may need to be removed for the X-ray

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The cost of an ECDA medical check-up in Singapore varies depending on the tests required. At ATA Medical, the chest X-ray starts from $49.05, while immunity blood tests such as measles IgG, mumps IgG, rubella IgG, and varicella IgG are priced separately if required. Vaccinations such as MMR or varicella may also be administered if immunity cannot be confirmed. An optional 24-hour express medical report is available for $32.70.
The ECDA pre-employment medical check-up form is an official document used to record the results of the required health screening for staff working in ECDA-licensed centres. It documents the findings of the physical examination, chest X-ray, and vaccination or immunity status for certain infectious diseases. The completed form must be certified by a doctor and submitted to the employer as part of the pre-employment requirements.
An ECDA medical check-up is generally valid for 12 months from the date of certification on the medical report form. If you change employers within this period, the same medical report may still be accepted by another ECDA-licensed centre. However, employers may request a new check-up if the previous certification has expired or if updated health information is required.
A blood test is not always required for the ECDA medical check-up. Serological blood tests are typically performed only if your vaccination history or immunity status for diseases such as measles, mumps, rubella, or varicella cannot be confirmed through existing records or declarations. The test checks for antibodies to determine whether you have immunity to these infections.
Yes, you may be able to start work after receiving the first dose of the MMR vaccine, provided the second dose is scheduled within 12 months and recorded on the ECDA medical form. This allows staff to begin work while completing the required vaccination schedule. The second dose should still be administered according to the recommended timeline.
If you are declared unfit for work in a pre-school, the employer may not be able to deploy you to work in the centre until the issue identified during the medical check-up is addressed. Depending on the reason, further medical evaluation, treatment, or documentation may be required before reassessment. It is advisable to follow the guidance of your doctor and employer regarding the next steps.
Yes, relief staff and enrichment vendors providing services at ECDA-licensed centres generally need to complete the ECDA medical check-up. The requirement applies to individuals who work within the centre environment or may have contact with children, not only full-time teaching staff. This helps ensure that all personnel working in the centre meet the required health screening standards.
