What Is Tamiflu®?

Tamiflu®, also known as oseltamivir, is an antiviral medication used to treat and prevent influenza (flu), a contagious acute respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It is available in capsule form and as an oral suspension, and is prescribed to reduce the severity and duration of flu symptoms. Given how common the flu is, Tamiflu® can help minimise the impact of the flu on your daily life.

Influenza Symptoms

Symptoms of influenza can appear within 1 to 4 days after exposure to the influenza virus and can range from mild to severe:

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Some individuals, especially children, may also experience vomiting and diarrhoea

How Does Tamiflu® Work?

Tamiflu® works by inhibiting the action of neuraminidase, an enzyme found on the surface of the influenza virus. This inhibition prevents the virus from spreading to healthy cells, thereby limiting the progression and severity of the flu. Tamiflu® is most effective in reducing the duration of flu symptoms by about 1 day when taken within 48 hours of symptom onset. It is usually prescribed for 5 days and recommended to be taken with food to reduce potential side effects.

Tamiflu® Side Effects

While Tamiflu® is generally well-tolerated, some individuals may experience side effects that can include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Stomach pain
  • Headache
  • Dizziness

In rare cases, individuals may experience more severe side effects such as allergic reactions or neuropsychiatric events, including confusion and abnormal behaviour. It is important to consult a doctor promptly if any severe or unusual symptoms occur.
